Trinity Fields School and Resource Centre- 3rd Millennium Award- Gesture Based Technology: Revision

Trinity Fields is a Special Needs school that serves the County Borough of Caerphilly.  We have 134 pupils on roll aged 3-19 in 17 classes. The majority of our pupils have severe learning difficulties and all of our pupils have a statement of special educational needs.

We are applying for the 3rd Millennium award to highlight the work we have done using gesture based technology with pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties and severe learning difficulties.  The school was given Sector Leading Practice for this by Estyn in November 2012.

The school has been using emerging and developing technology in the whole school environment to meet the physical and learning needs of all of our pupils regardless of ability.  A key principle of this has been to increase engagement and the independence of those pupils with severe physical disabilities and also severe sensory processing issues.  We use iPads, Kinect, motion sensors and eyegaze technology to achieve our aim of increasing pupils' independence and engagement in school.
